About us:

Summerz End Youth Fest (SEYF) was established by the Canterbury Refugee Council on the 5th of April 2014, the concept of Zhiyan Basharati, Youth Coordinator and the Spokesperson of the Council. The festival is led by a team of passionate and visionary young Cantabrians dedicated to creating an inclusive environment for all youth with the aim of bridging the gap between youth from all walks of life and our communities. SEYF identified six priority areas for action namely in Health, Education, Environment, Sports, Technology and Community Engagement. SEYF project activities are formed under these six key areas, which are critical in creating an inclusive environment for youth to connect and gain a sense of belonging regardless of cultural, ethnic or religious affiliations.

SEYF initiative requires a multi-sectorial, ethnic and cross-cultural collaboration and this is reflected in the diversity of the organizing committee. Comprising 60 members, with 20 key personnel from a diverse range of groups- ranging from the Canterbury Refugee Council, the Nigerian Canterbury Association of New Zealand, the University of Canterbury, Lincoln University, the Christchurch Youth Council, the YMCA, Law for Change, the Court Theatre Youth Company, the Canterbury Indonesian Society, the New Zealand National Refugee Youth Council and other community youth leaders.

The SEYF movement consists of a whole range of programmes and projects made possible with our awesome partners! Our six priority areas focused on are: Health, Education, Environment, Technology, Community Engagement and Sport.

SEYF pursues our six priority areas through a variety of programmes and projects. Activities may include:

• Contacts and dialogues with service providers from governmental, inter-governmental, NGOs and young community leaders in each priority area
• Development of programmes in our six key priority areas of action.
• Provision of a platform and opportunity for youth to voice and advocate issues that concern youth from all walks of life
• Promotion of our young leaders from young grassroots community organizations, youth councils, and young women leaders as models of contribution and moderation to reduce religious radicalization, cultural, sexuality, gender, health and education status marginalization.
• Building relationships and participation with youth provides an opportunity for developing a sense of self-direction, independence, social competence and resilience that gives them the desire to build a better society. These are our future leaders and decision makers. And they are coming to Summerz End Youth Fest.

Every generation in the future will have its own responses to emerging conditions. Our eye to the future is to foster and recognise growth and development in these conditions. They include:

• Giving youth from all walks of life a sense of belonging through connecting with each other and the community.
• Strengthening relationships between youth and the community.
• Strengthening relationships between youth and service providers in governmental, inter-governmental, NGOs and youth councils.
• Creating an inclusive environment without any religious, cultural and ethnic affiliations.
• SEYF’s principle of continual transformation is to unceasingly evaluate issues that matter to youth and strengthen their aspirations in the six key areas.
